We understand that children may encounter a range of barriers to learning and participation, and we are committed to identifying and addressing these barriers through appropriate support and high-quality provision. The most common barriers we support at St. George’s include:

• Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
• Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
• English as an Additional Language (EAL)
• Socio-economic disadvantage, including pupils from vulnerable or underrepresented families
• Irregular attendance, which can affect educational progress and wellbeing
• High mobility, particularly for pupils joining the school at different points throughout the academic year

Through early identification, tailored interventions, high-quality teaching, and strong partnerships with families and external professionals, we ensure that every child receives the support they need to succeed. Our inclusive ethos underpins everything we do, enabling all pupils to feel safe, valued, confident, and empowered to achieve their full potential and make a positive contribution to the world around them.

The Nest

The Nest is a very important place for some of our children. It is a sanctuary for them and a place where they are extremely well looked after and cared for by our inclusion team.

The children who use the room have been chosen to be supported through a number of different interventions due to concerns that have arisen in the classroom, playground or from requests from home.

The programmes delivered via The Nest invariably aim to make learning accessible to all by removing barriers related to SEND or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH). The Nest enables staff to provide personalised curriculums (both academic and SEMH) to pupils in a safe and inclusive environment.

We are passionate about creating a school where everyone feels welcomed, included, and able to thrive. We recognise that children learn in different ways and may face barriers to learning at different points in their educational journey. Our commitment is to identify and remove these barriers as early as possible, ensuring that every pupil can access a broad, balanced, and ambitious curriculum. Where a child has Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND), we take every reasonable step to identify needs promptly and provide the appropriate support to enable them to succeed.

We believe that all children should experience a curriculum that is engaging, meaningful, and ambitious, while remaining responsive to individual needs. For pupils requiring additional support, learning is carefully adapted to ensure they can access the curriculum, achieve their personal targets, and make progress towards their individual aspirations and, where applicable, their EHCP outcomes.

We place a strong emphasis on developing the knowledge, skills, and experiences that will prepare pupils for success both in school and beyond. Through a range of enriching opportunities, practical learning experiences, community engagement, outdoor learning, and targeted interventions, pupils develop confidence, independence, resilience, and the skills needed for adult life.

Alongside high-quality adaptive teaching, pupils may access specialist interventions tailored to their individual needs. These interventions are selected carefully to support communication, social interaction, emotional wellbeing, cognition, physical development, and personal independence, ensuring that each child receives the support necessary to flourish.
